Commercial Electrical Workspace Enhancement and Upgrades: MJR Electric’s Involvement in St. Paul’s Hospital Carbon Emission Reduction Project

St. Paul’s Hospital is an acute care, teaching and research hospital located in downtown Vancouver. At St. Paul’s Hospital, a commitment to environmental sustainability led to a significant project aimed at reducing carbon emissions. MJR Electric played a pivotal role by supplying power for the installation of two 405 KW 600V 3PH electrical boilers. In this blog, we will delve into the details of MJR Electric’s involvement in this transformative project, highlighting our expertise, challenges overcome, and the positive impact on St. Paul’s Hospital’s carbon footprint.

1. Supplying Power: From the Ground Floor to the 4th Floor Mechanical Room: MJR Electric was responsible for supplying power to the newly installed electrical boilers. They meticulously executed the power supply process, which involved:

  • Constructing a 1600 amp 600V electrical sub-service in the ground floor electrical vault.
  • Installing 100 feet of industrial ladder tray to accommodate nine 500 KCMIL single conductors, separation marble blocks, and a 4/0 system ground cable with PVC.
  • Customizing an aluminum plate for the single conductors’ termination on the source side of the new switchgear and using a fibreglass plate on the load side to comply with code requirements.
  • Navigating the challenge of pulling approximately 110 feet of 10 lbs per foot 9 500 KCMIL copper teck cables through the ladder tray and electrical vault.

2. Coordinating Shutdown for Successful Termination: To complete the installation, a 13-hour shutdown was required at St. Paul’s Hospital. MJR Electric skillfully coordinated with the hospital to transfer all power off the switchgear, allowing them to terminate the nine 500 KCMIL cables to the 1600-amp breaker source. This careful planning ensured a safe and efficient process without disrupting critical operations.

3. Ensuring Smooth Cable Pulling: Pulling heavy-duty cables over long distances can present significant challenges. MJR Electric employed mechanical leverage, electrical tuggers, and pulley wheels to successfully pull the nine 500 KCMIL copper cables and 350 3C KCMIL copper runs over a distance of 300 feet, ensuring a reliable power supply from the ground floor to the 4th-floor mechanical room.

4. Building a Specialized Racking System on the 4th Floor: To house the disconnects, panels, transformers, and EMT required for powering the pumps and boilers, MJR Electric constructed a sophisticated racking system on the 4th floor. Their expertise and attention to detail guaranteed the installation’s efficiency, functionality, and compliance with industry standards.

5. Delivering Excellence: Timely Completion with Top-Quality Standards: MJR Electric’s commitment to excellence shone throughout the entire project. Despite the complexities involved, they successfully delivered the installation within the projected timelines while maintaining their high standard of quality. The project’s success was a testament to the dedication and skill of the MJR Electric team.

MJR Electric played a pivotal role in providing the necessary power infrastructure for the installation of two 405 KW 600V 3PH electrical boilers at St. Paul’s restaurant.
