What are the EV Ready Rebate Offers for Apartment and Condo Buildings?

If your apartment or residential condo building is in the process of making upgrades to support EV charging capabilities at its parking stalls, there are a few things you should know. For example, if you want to install an electric vehicle charging station in your home or around your community, here’s something you can do: request a BC Hydro rebate! In addition to this helpful piece of news we also have some useful advice that could benefit many others. That’s because there are actually two types of EV rebates – EV Ready rebates and standalone EV charger rebates that everyone can benefit from!

By leveraging a rebate program, organizations can identify the right locations with high throughputs to install EV chargers. This is one of the ways in which companies can reduce capital costs due to the fact that a single charger has the potential to service multiple parking spaces.

EV READY REBATES

• Up to $3,000 for EV Ready plan
• Up to $80,000 for EV Ready infrastructure
• Up to $14,000 for chargers
• Total $97,000 per apartment / condo complex

What is a EV Ready Plan?

An EV ready plan is a document that both residential and commercial structures will have to include in their codes to provide each unit with at least one EV charging spot. An EV ready plan is a blueprint of sorts drawn up by licensed electricians such as MJR Electric and other related professionals, that outline the necessary infrastructure that needs to be provided by either the building owner or resident.

Owners of   multi-unit  buildings and commercial establishments* that hire a licensed electrical contractor or electrician to create their EV Ready Plan can receive up to 75 per cent off their installation costs for charging stations, to a maximum of $3, 000 , while funding lasts.

An EV Ready plan is required in order to be eligible for an EV Ready infrastructure rebate.

What are the Eligibility for EV Ready Infrastructure and EV Charger Rebates?

Pre-approval from BC Hydro is required for infrastructure and EV charger rebates. A Pre-Application Process is not needed for the EV Ready plan rebate. You will have to apply for and secure pre-approval before purchasing or installing any infrastructure or chargers; failure to secure this approval may lead to retroactive changes in pricing and/or funding eligibility by the Ministry of Energy, Mines & Petroleum Resource (EMPR).

Once you’ve received pre-approval, your project must be completed and your final application submitted within four months.

For the EV Ready plan rebate:

• Cost of developing the plan

For the EV Ready infrastructure rebate:

• Engineering design services
• Electrical and communication infrastructure installation
• Associated construction costs
• Permit costs
• Utility extension fees
• EV parking signage

For the EV charger rebate:

• Purchasing the charging station
• Labour and construction costs for installation of the charging station and associated conduit
• Site assessments including analysis of electrical capacity, review of panel capacity and infrastructure, and identification of design options
• Electrical and related permits
• Parking and electrical design required by the charging stations and conduit
• EV parking signage
• Network connection fees (stations must be connected for a minimum of two years)

What is the Required Documentation for EV Ready Plan Rebate?

Before you apply to any rebates, you want to make sure that you have all the required paperwork prepared. Depending on the total value of your purchase, and the rebate program that you’re choosing, there can be quite a lot of different documentation to file for pre-approval purposes.

• EV Ready plan – A copy of the EV Ready plan that was created for you/your property. Make sure it meets the requirements.
• EV Ready plan invoice – A copy of the paid invoice from the electrical contractor and/or professional engineer for the costs (broken down by activities performed) to create the EV Ready plan. If these costs aren’t due until the EV Ready infrastructure is installed, upload the quote for the plan instead.

What is the Application Process for EV Ready Plan?

Apply for pre-approval

If you have completed your project’s documents, start with filling in an application form. It takes approximately 10-15 minutes to complete the three-step application process since it consists of providing your basic contact details and some information about what work needs to be done. Filling out the form might seem tiresome and unnecessary at first but it is of great importance if you want to get funding as well as support and subsidies available for building owners and tenants

When you’ve submitted your application, you’ll receive a confirmation number via email.

Once you’re pre-approved

After we review your application, we’ll email you indicating whether or not you were approved. That email will provide a summary of the next steps after which we can officially start working together. As soon as that happens, our project manager will reach out to confirm what exactly you have in mind for your social media marketing campaign so that we can get started right away!

Get your electrician to complete the required document: 

To ensure your project’s success, you need to ensure that all the proper permits are taken care of by your local Vancouver electrician.

There are three variations of this document, depending on whether you are pre-approved for:

• EV Ready Infrastructure Rebate
•  EV Charger Rebate Only (for buildings that have previously received an EV Ready Infrastructure Rebate)
• EV Charger Rebate Only (for buildings that have not received an EV Ready Infrastructure Rebate)

Submit your final application

Once your project is complete, come back to submit your final application before your deadline. In your final application, you’ll need to provide:

• Your application reference number
• Copies of your paid project invoices
• A copy of the appropriate completed contractor form (see variations above)

Then, we’ll review your documents and if everything is sufficient, we’ll process your rebate payment within 90 days.
