How much it cost for the installation of EV Charger in an apartment or townhouse
The cost of setting up charging in an apartment or townhouse can range from $300 to $20,000. The price will depend on the building’s situation and the type of charger you select. Every building is different, so it’s best to ask an electrical contractor for a quote that is specific to your situation.
There are three levels of charging. We will talk about Level 1 and Level 2 which are mostly found in apartments and townhouses.
Level 1: Installing an EV charging station connected directly to the electrical grid.
A Level 1 charger (120 V/ 15-20 Amps) doesn’t require any extra equipment – your electric vehicle will come with a cordset charger that you can plug into any standard three-prong outlet. However, we recommend only using outlets that have a dedicated circuit for charging your electric vehicle so that no other devices are accidentally plugged in and overload the circuit. If you don’t have any outlets available, you’ll need to install a new dedicated circuit and outlet.
Installation costs can vary from $300 to $2500. Typically, installation costs can increase if:
- a dedicated circuit needs to be installed
- a new outlet needs to be installed (new outlets for Level 1 charging also require 20Amps)
- the distance to the electrical room is far from the parking stall
- an upgrade to the building’s electrical system is needed (not common)
Level 2: Installing an EV Charging station which is connected to a plug. This can be a self-installed charging station, or a plug installed by the building management.
Most Level 2 chargers will require installation by a certified electrician to ensure the work is up to code and meets all permit and inspection requirements. The cost of installation can widely differ between hard-wired and portable chargers, with typical hard-wired charger installations costing between $4000 and $16,000 – which could be more expensive for more complicated installations. Portable charger installations typically cost less.
Installation costs will vary based on:
- number of circuits and chargers installed in your home
- distance between the charger and electrical room
- building age and modifications
- required electrical upgrades
