How do you know if you need to upgrade?
The reason for this is that the appliances and electronics in the home are getting more and more efficient each year. If your home was built in the past 20 years and you have a 200 amp service panel, you are likely to have enough capacity to handle a lot of the latest energy efficient appliances and electronics. But if your home was built before the 1980s, it is likely to have service panel with a 100 amp service. You can check the amperage of your service panel by looking at the main panel box of your home. It will have a label stating its amperage. If it is a 100 amp service panel, you can upgrade it to a 200 amp service panel. If you want to run the latest energy efficient appliances and electronics, you need to upgrade your electrical service panel.

Sending request to your local electrical utility company
The process of upgrading electrical service from 100 amp to 200 amp may seem complicated, but it’s actually quite simple. You start by sending a request to your local electrical utility company; most applications can be made online. Usually, the application will be reviewed within 3-4 weeks, and you’ll be informed afterward if you’re allowed to have 200-amp service.

Power reconnection
After the utility approves your application, they’ll contact you to schedule a date and time for the power to be disconnected and reconnected. Usually, this will be 2-4 weeks in advance, so you have time to adjust your schedule. Keep in mind that the power will be out for 4-8 hours.
Safe Service Replacement
At the time set by BC Hydro, a crew will come to disconnect your power for safe service replacement. Electricians will then do any necessary upgrades. Most likely, they will replace the panel, meter base, wires from meter to panel, grounding wire, and label the panel. An inspector will check everything before giving a permit for reconnecting the power (pre-authorized contractors can pass inspection without an inspector’s actual visit).
When power is connected your electrician will check that all breakers labeled properly and all plugs/lights are working properly.

After inspection, a certificate of inspection which you can provide for your insurance company.
