8 steps to a successful EV charger installation at a single-family home
As a single-family homeowner with an electric vehicle (EV), it’s definitely worth your while to install a Level 2 charger in your garage, carport, or near your driveway. Doing so makes charging your EV much easier and more convenient.
If you live in an apartment or condo, the steps are slightly different.
Step 1: Determine your home’s eligibility
Before having a home charger installed, it’s important to check with your municipality or Technical Safety BC to ensure that your home is eligible. This will help avoid any potential complications or issues down the road.
Step 2: Confirm you have sufficient electrical service
Before you install an EV charger in your home, you’ll need to make sure that your current electricity supply is sufficient to support it. If you need to upgrade your service, you can find more information about electrical service extensions on our website.
Step 3: Confirm your electrical panel has space
Before installing your EV charger, make sure to check if your electrical panel has enough space to accommodate a new circuit breaker. If not, you’ll need to get professional help from an electrician.
Step 4: Purchase a charger
When selecting and purchasing an EV charger, be sure to check if the model qualifies for rebate – this can help save you money in the long run! View EV chargers eligible for rebates
Step 5: Obtain an electrical permit
You need to apply for an electrical permit from your municipality (or Technical Safety BC) before you can start any electrical work. If you’re hiring an electrician, they’ll take care of this for you.
Step 6: Charger installation
You will need to install the EV charging station and get a safety inspection from a certified officer before any wiring is done. After the installation is complete, your electrician needs to fill out a contractor consultation form. You will need this form when you apply for your rebate.
Step 7: Inspection
Make sure to have the installation inspected by your municipality (or Technical Safety BC) for safety and code-compliance. If an electrician did the installation, they will typically handle this step for you.
Step 8: Apply for a rebate
